Our Work with the Town of Gilbert, Arizona

Gilbert, Arizona, one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States, has embarked on an ambitious journey to become the "City of the Future". This mission is driven by innovative solutions that anticipate change and create a sustainable future for its residents. A pivotal step in this journey was partnering with SDG Group to implement a Data Governance Strategy, engineer a centralized data technology stack, and support data visualization creation as part of their Performance Management initiative.

In this article, we are proud to highlight a portion of Gilbert’s larger success story by showcasing their “Wastewater” dashboard. Fill out the form below to access the full success story:

Background: Wastewater Management for Gilbert, AZ

Wastewater collection is one of many essential functions of Gilbert’s Public Works Department. To protect public health and ensure optimal functionality of the town’s wastewater collection system, Gilbert schedules regular sewer pipe cleanings and routinely monitors its infrastructure using video technology.

The Wastewater Dashboard: Visualizing A Critical Function of Public Works

The dashboard displays four visualizations to help the Public Works Department and Gilbert citizens alike to easily access key metrics related to the cleaning, inspection, and overall upkeep of Gilbert’s public sewers.

The Public Works Department splits these key metrics into two categories:

1. Sewer Pipe Cleaning (the top and bottom visualizations on the left-hand side of the dashboard)

Gilbert’s Goal: Clean 20% of Gilbert’s wastewater collection system annually, which equals 182 miles of sewer pipes.

This ambitious target aims to establish a systematic approach to maintaining the integrity and functionality of the wastewater system. Regular cleanings are crucial in preventing blockages and long-term damage to Gilbert’s infrastructure, and they also:

  • Protect public health and reduce odors within the community
  • Prevent premature failures of sewer pipes, manholes, or lift stations
  • Reduce hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas that can result from septic conditions
  • Mitigate potential financial damage claims caused by sewer issues

2. Video Monitoring and Inspections (the top and bottom visualizations on the right-hand side of the dashboard)

Gilbert’s Goal: Conduct regular video inspections on 15% of Gilbert’s sewer pipes a year, which equals 137 miles.

Regular video inspections of the Town’s sewer pipes using closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) provide a thorough visual assessment of pipe conditions, delivering crucial information on the location, severity, and extent of any issues. These inspections enable a proactive and efficient approach to managing Gilbert’s sewer system, empowering staff to make informed decisions, prioritize resources effectively, and improve the overall functionality and longevity of the sewer network.

These video inspections help the Gilbert Public Works Department to:

  • Detect pipes in poor condition
  • Avoid overestimating repair costs
  • Discover illegal sewer connections
  • Pinpoint sources of inflow and infiltration
  • Find buried or lost manholes
  • Assess the effectiveness of pipe-cleaning operation
