Our Work with the Town of Gilbert, Arizona

Gilbert, Arizona, one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States, has embarked on an ambitious journey to become the "City of the Future". This mission is driven by innovative solutions that anticipate change and create a sustainable future for its residents. A pivotal step in this journey was partnering with SDG Group to implement a Data Governance Strategy, engineer a centralized data technology stack, and support data visualization creation as part of their Performance Management initiative.

In this article, we are proud to highlight a portion of Gilbert’s larger success story by showcasing their “Environmental Compliance” dashboard. Fill out the form below to access the full success story:

Background: Environmental Compliance in Gilbert, AZ

Stormwater cleaning and inspections are vital to keeping the stormwater infrastructure in optimal condition, ensuring it can efficiently manage water flow during storms, prevent flooding, and guarantee safety. Gilbert’s Environmental Compliance Team has collaborated with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to establish appropriate stormwater management goals, maintaining compliance with the MS4 Stormwater Permit.

Environmental Compliance Dashboard: Visualizing Stormwater, Hazardous Waste, & Educational Events

The dashboard displays five interactive charts to help the town and its citizens better visualize efforts to not only protect environmental quality, but also measure their results against established annual KPIs.

Visualization #1: Stormwater Structures Inspected (top left dashboard)

Gilbert’s Goal: Inspect 4,992 stormwater structures annually.

The top left dashboard tracks the total count of stormwater structures repaired in Gilbert on a monthly basis. Stormwater cleaning and inspections are vital to keeping the stormwater infrastructure in optimal condition, ensuring it can efficiently manage water flow during storms, prevent flooding, and guarantee safety.

Through the Performance Management process, Gilbert was able to identify discrepancies in recorded data relating to updated software templates and varied methods of data entries. Through this discovery, Gilbert has begun to take action to streamline entry processes for its employees to ensure uniformity and consistency moving forward.

Visualization #2: Household Hazardous Waste Collected (top right dashboard)

The top right dashboard tracks the total weight, in pounds, of household hazardous waste collected in Gilbert on a monthly basis. The town has a 4,000 square foot facility where Gilbert residents can safely dispose of many household hazardous waste materials.

Visualization #3: Stormwater Pipe Cleaned (bottom left dashboard)

Gilbert’s Goal: Clean 20% (or 84,000 linear feet of pipe) of the town’s stormwater infrastructure annually.

The bottom left dashboard tracks the total number of feet of stormwater pipe cleaned in Gilbert on a monthly basis. The target of cleaning 7,000 feet each month ensures the stormwater infrastructure remains in good condition and can efficiently manage water flow during storms.

However, achieving this KPI has been a difficult task for the town because of high levels of sediment, trash, and debris in the pipes and structures. To improve their progress, Gilbert plans to implement new resources to help make the cleaning process more efficient.

Visualizations #4 & #5: Educational Events (bottom right dashboards)

Gilbert’s Goal: Host 15 educational events annually; Achieve 2,500 interactions from participants at educational events.

The bottom right dashboards track the total count of Environmental Compliance educational events the town hosts on an annual basis, as well as the total interactions received from participants at these events.
